Terrorist interest in chemicals
Terrorist’s choice of methods of attack is constantly changing. Therefore, security planning in New South Wales (NSW) considers a broad range of attack methods including use of chemicals that can be used to produce explosives or toxic weapons.
In Australia, approximately 40,000 chemicals make up 400,000 chemical products. Only a very small percentage of these could be potentially used in a terrorist attack however these chemicals are also used for a broad range of legitimate purposes by individuals and businesses.

ReplyDeleteMessage from the Commissioner of Police
Andrew Scipione - Commissioner of PoliceThe world in which we live has changed so much in recent years as acts of terror in places such as America, London and Bali redefine our security.
Countering terrorism is a priority for the New South Wales (NSW) Police Force, and we have taken the lead in developing a prevention and investigative capability through the establishment of the Counter Terrorism & Special Tactics Command. Now this website, secureNSW expands our online capability.
As the largest law enforcement organisation in Australia, the NSW Police Force has a significant and integral role in national counter terrorism planning. Together with our state and federal partners, we are committed to ensuring that in the event of a terrorist incident in NSW, we have well-resourced and trained police officers to quickly and effectively respond to, and resolve any situation.
Maintaining a secure environment for our people, our state and our country is as much a challenge now as it has ever been. This website has been identified as a relevant and appropriate solution to delivering counter terrorism information in a central online location. secureNSW will be a one-stop shop for the NSW community.
Some of the key objectives of secureNSW are:
* To provide counter terrorism information and demonstrate response capability to the community
* To engage and educate communities at risk of isolation and marginalisation on counter terrorism and related issues
* To communicate key information before, during and after an incident, and support recovery efforts online
I encourage you to browse this site and take note of the key messages we are promoting. Remember, the NSW Police Force is committed to providing you, your family and your friends with a safe environment and a secure NSW.
